Earlier this year, our research team conducted field visits across eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi. What we found was stark: millions of people still live without reliable electricity. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), over 600 million people in Africa—more than half the continent—lack access to consistent power. In rural areas of DRC and Burundi, that figure reaches up to 85%, leaving communities completely cut off from modern opportunities. Without electricity, schools cannot use digital teaching materials, health centers cannot store vaccines safely, and small businesses are confined to manual, low-efficiency operations.
The consequences are profound. Lack of power limits access to education, training, and income-generating opportunities. Schools without electricity cannot run multimedia lessons, limiting students’ exposure to global knowledge. Community organizations struggle to communicate vital health or civic information. Individuals who want to start small businesses cannot leverage digital marketing or modern tools that are common in urban and electrified regions. In short, the absence of electricity blocks pathways to social and economic development.
