Nurumax: Bridging the Electricity Gap to Unlock Opportunities in Africa

Earlier this year, our research team conducted field visits across eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi. What we found was stark: millions of people still live without reliable electricity. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), over 600 million people in Africa—more than half the continent—lack access to consistent power. In rural areas of DRC and Burundi, that figure reaches up to 85%, leaving communities completely cut off from modern opportunities. Without electricity, schools cannot use digital teaching materials, health centers cannot store vaccines safely, and small businesses are confined to manual, low-efficiency operations.

The consequences are profound. Lack of power limits access to education, training, and income-generating opportunities. Schools without electricity cannot run multimedia lessons, limiting students’ exposure to global knowledge. Community organizations struggle to communicate vital health or civic information. Individuals who want to start small businesses cannot leverage digital marketing or modern tools that are common in urban and electrified regions. In short, the absence of electricity blocks pathways to social and economic development.

This is where Nurumax steps in. Our project provides portable mini-projectors powered by powerbanks, a simple but transformative solution. These devices bring power-independent access to visual content for schools, organizations, and now, importantly, individuals living off-grid. Families can use them for personal learning, entertainment, or even small-scale community events, while local businesses can leverage them for presentations, marketing, or educational workshops.

The advantages are multi-sectoral:

  • Education: Teachers can deliver multimedia lessons without relying on grid electricity.
  • Healthcare & Social Awareness: Organizations can screen informational content about disease prevention, hygiene, and local initiatives.
  • Entrepreneurship & Business: Entrepreneurs can host workshops, promote products, and conduct training sessions for employees or clients.
  • Households & Individuals: Families gain access to digital learning, movies, and cultural content, bridging the gap between rural and urban life.

Why Nurumax is viable: This solution is not only impactful but also sustainable. Portable mini-projectors are relatively low-cost, durable, and easy to maintain. By collaborating with local entrepreneurs for distribution and support, Nurumax creates a self-sustaining network that generates income while serving communities. Our research shows that small investments in portable technology can unlock education and economic opportunities worth 5–10 times the initial cost by enabling access to digital content and skills.

Currently, Nurumax is active in eastern DRC and Burundi, regions where access to electricity is limited and schools, NGOs, and households face significant challenges. By partnering with local entrepreneurs, Nurumax ensures efficient distribution, hands-on support, and ongoing maintenance, which makes the project scalable and adaptable.

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • Over 3,000 households and 50 organizations have already benefited from pilot programs.
  • More than 100 entrepreneurs have joined the network, creating income-generating opportunities while expanding access.
  • In rural zones, students and families are now able to access lessons, health information, and digital content previously unavailable.

By bringing electricity-independent projection technology to communities, Nurumax bridges the gap between rural and urban opportunities. It demonstrates that even in areas without conventional infrastructure, innovation and local partnerships can unlock education, economic empowerment, and community growth.

In a world where electricity defines access to opportunity, Nurumax proves that a simple, portable, and community-centered solution can make a real difference. By empowering schools, organizations, and households, we help entire communities take charge of their education, health, and economic development—one mini-projector at a time.
